Arkansas was once referred to as "The Bear State" by early settlers who found the territory home to a vast number of bears. Pronounced "Bar” State, although never officially adopted as a nickname, characterized Arkansas as a sportsman’s paradise, with bear hunting the pinnacle of a hunter’s experience. Today, more than 4,000 bears roam the dense forests of the region.
